Boxing Gym on Melrose: Trinity Boxing Club Comes to Los Angeles

Somewhere in a back alley off Melrose, behind the vintage shops and the overpriced coffee and the guy selling crystals out of a van, there's a boxing gym owned by the same nitwit who opened the one in New York. Welcome to Trinity Boxing Club Los Angeles.

New York Roots, LA Sun

Trinity started in lower Manhattan in 2004 — a scrappy gym in the Financial District built with a bank loan and a lot of nerve. The founder grew up boxing in Brooklyn, fought in the Golden Gloves Finals at Madison Square Garden, and spent 40 years opening gyms. Los Angeles was the logical next step, mostly because he wanted to complain about the weather somewhere warmer.

The LA gym sits at 7817 Melrose Avenue. Same philosophy as New York. Same old-school training. Same refusal to install mirrors or play EDM. The only concessions to California are the natural light and the fact that people occasionally show up in flip-flops, which we discourage.

What Makes This Gym Different from Every Other LA Boxing Gym

Los Angeles has more boxing gyms per capita than anywhere on earth. Most of them fall into two categories: old-school gyms where competitive fighters train and beginners feel unwelcome, or boutique fitness studios where you punch a bag in the dark to a DJ set and learn absolutely nothing about boxing.

Trinity is neither. We teach real boxing — technique, footwork, combinations, defense — to real people. Actors, writers, producers, musicians, parents, students, people who work from home and need a reason to leave the house. Every class includes one-on-one pad work with a trainer. Not a fitness instructor. A boxing coach who knows the difference between a jab and a cross and can actually teach you both.

The Two-Hand-Touch Version

Nobody gets hit at Trinity. Our group classes are entirely non-contact. You learn to box without boxing someone, which is ideal for people whose face is their livelihood — and in this town, that's roughly everyone. We train you like a professional fighter without giving you a mug like one. Your agent will thank us.

The Workout

Twelve rounds. Three minutes each. You rotate through mitt work with a trainer, heavy bag drills, footwork exercises, and conditioning. It's a full-body workout that will humble you regardless of how many Pilates reformer classes you've taken. And unlike most LA fitness experiences, you'll actually learn something useful.
