who's in your corner

snow-gramercy

This was me in 1986 at the Gramercy Gym on 14th Street. It originally belonged to  Cus D'Amato before he sold it to the fellow looking over my shoulder in the background, the Great Al Gavin. Al and his partner Bob Jackson were the reason I opened Trinity and I have spent the better part of my life trying to capture that lightning in a bottle. The guy you see in the foreground was not the guy I saw in the mirror. The long and winding road I took to get there was not an easy one but with the help of God and a few people like Al I got there. Ten years prior to this I was a comic book nerd, attending Star Trek conventions wearing a Captain Kirk shirt and had panic attacks just being around people. Right here I was getting ready to fight in front of 15.000 people in the NYC Golden Glove Finals at Madison Square Garden. In the 40 years since I've opened 7 gyms in New York and LA, made some memorable impressions on reality tv and got to meet some really remarkable people. I can't attribute this success to boxing but the people that enabled me to box, in particular Al Gavin. Without that man in the corner telling me what I could actually do and teaching me this mystical skill with which to do it I don't think I could have escaped that skin prison I was living in between constant fear and quiet desperation. This gym is my living testament to all the boxing trainers, gym owners and fighters who make doubt a dead religion.
