ATHLETIC INTELLIGENCE
A smart guy walks into the gym and his prefrontal cortex has been his meal ticket his whole life. Every problem he's ever faced, he solved by analyzing it. So he treats the jump rope, the double-end bag, the footwork ladder the same way — he's narrating each step to himself, monitoring his own hands, running a commentary track. And that's exactly the machinery that has to shut off for coordination to happen. This is the transient hypofrontality stuff — motor learning lives in the cerebellum and basal ganglia, and it consolidates through repetition, not through comprehension. The explicit system and the procedural system are different animals, and the explicit system, when it's running hot, actively interferes with the procedural one. It's the golfer thinking about his swing mid-swing. You can understand the mechanics of a slip perfectly and still eat every jab in the gym.
There's an ego layer too, and it's usually the bigger obstacle. Smart people have an identity built on being fast learners. Coordination drills humiliate that identity — the first two weeks on a speed bag, you look like an idiot, full stop, and there's no way to shortcut it with intelligence. The lawyer or the surgeon isn't used to being visibly bad at something in a room full of people. So one of two things happens: they over-intellectualize to protect the ego ("explain the biomechanics to me again"), which is really just avoidance dressed as curiosity, or they quietly quit. The kid who never analyzed anything in his life just does the reps and passes them in a month.
The fix isn't more explanation, it's less. Fatigue helps — tired brains stop narrating. External focus helps — watch the bag, not your hands. Rhythm helps — count, hum, anything that gives the verbal mind a job so it stays out of the motor system's lane. Income, not outcome applies here directly: the drill isn't a test to pass, it's deposits into an account, and the smart guy's whole problem is he keeps checking the balance.
