HOW TO WRAP YOUR HANDS — THE FIRST LESSON EVERY BOXER MUST LEARN

Before you throw your first punch, you must learn to protect your hands.

Hand wrapping is the first and most important ritual of the boxer. It protects the small bones of the hand and wrist, stabilizes the knuckles, and prepares the mind for the work ahead. In the great gyms of the early twentieth century, a fighter who did not know how to wrap his own hands was not yet a fighter at all.

Here is the Trinity Boxing Club method, taught to us by trainers who learned it from trainers who learned it from the old masters themselves.

Step One: Begin with the loop. Place the loop of the wrap around your thumb and unroll the wrap across the back of your hand toward your wrist. Make three wraps around the wrist for stability.

Step Two: Wrap the hand. Bring the wrap across the back of the hand and around the knuckles three times. Keep the wrap snug but not tight enough to cut off circulation.

Step Three: Wrap the thumb. Bring the wrap down from the knuckles, around the thumb, and back up. This anchors the thumb and prevents sprains.

Step Four: Wrap between the fingers. Run the wrap between each finger — index and middle, middle and ring, ring and pinky — to separate and protect them.

Step Five: Finish at the wrist. Use any remaining wrap to reinforce the wrist, then secure with the velcro fastener. Make a fist. The wrap should feel firm, supportive, and comfortable.

Come into Trinity Boxing Club and we will show you in person. Some things are best learned with your hands.
