Well Done, Weller!
Jody Weller shouldn't be fighting. She's too smart, too pretty and too nice to be a fighter. But, fortunately for boxing, she is a fighter. A family and a medical career can wait.
In the twenty five years that I've spent in boxing, I've never seen anyone who's a better representation of what boxing should be and could be. She's the anti-Tyson.
Six years ago, this scrawny, quiet kid with no athletic experience and a Big Mac habit decided she wanted to box. I told her she was nuts and should go to medical school. Good thing she didn't listen to this genius. Saturday night in Oxnard, Ca., Jody not only won the 125 lb. National Championship, but did it with such bravado that she was also named the Outstanding Boxer of the tournament. I've never encountered anyone that has displayed more focus, determination and courage in my life. She should be the new poster child for boxing. Congratulations Weller! It was my privelege and honor to work your corner Saturday night. And congratulations also to Luigi for the masterful job he has done not only with Jody but all his fighters. His passion for boxing and the welfare of his boxers should be an inspiration to all coaches and managers. Being associated with such outstanding individuals is my great fortune.
